I have one of the older Olympus recorders. It's the DS-30. There are new ones that came out. They are the Olympus dm-420and 520. The differences are the memory, and a fe recording settings. they cost around $110 to 200 depending on where you look. There are more expensive ones, but I don't know much about them. Perhaps someone else can help out.

gene. thank youfor the info. i purchased an olympius 420. it could be just mel. but, i am having so much trouble truning the fucker on and off. i know it is suppose to ring then tell me the battery level. mine does not do it often. so, i am returning it to best buy. i heard a podcast of it. thought it was gonna kick ass but man, it is a pain in the bummbbumm. again, it could be just me, i know where the on/off bbutton is located. so.....

get the victor reader stream and use it as a recorder. i did that in one of my lectures and is awesome. the sound quality is very good. you don't hear any annoying crackles which is one of my pet peeves. it is just like the ipod. i also use my ipod to record, but the drawback is the battery and you have to charge it every night after you've already recorded 2 long lectures. but with the victor reader stream, i recorded a 3 hour lecture and its still good as can be.

I used the Stream for recording lectures, and personally, I didn't like it much. It's fine if you're doing a recording yourself in a silent room, but if you're in a room fulll of other people ... It sounds bad. i'd love to get my hands on one of these new digital recorders. Do they have built-in stereo microphones, or would I have to get a set of binaural microphones from somewhere like sound professionals?

for the best results for something like that you want to try to not record to the lowest quality .. try maxing out the sound quality for the recording on the stream and stry again. Most if not all the digital recorders i have seem all come with the stereo mics and the options to replace them with others you buy after the fact.

I have a similar situation. I would like to record my lessons with my flute professor in college and need something that won't make the flute or anything sound distorted. Are there any good mikes and digital recorders that are good at this sort of thing?
Thanks! I will need this for the fall.
